We, the people of India

Before saying anything, I just want to say that I do not consider myself to be an acute critic of whatever is happening in society. But the sole reason of writing here is to express my view in front of others.

You people must have seen the major news covered on the news channels during last few days. Previous year ended with a rape involving a South African model in Mumbai and new year started with the flurry of sexual harassment cases against the women in New Delhi. It is shameful for our society. Rather I should say that it is shame on we, PEOPLE OF INDIA, being the part of this society.

If you are a regular listener of prime time news on any of the national news channel, you must have heard about the series of murders of elderly couples in New Delhi. Two days back, a family was burnt alive in Raghopur, just because they were suspect in a case of missing buffalo. Two person were shot dead in a
running train in MP, just because they were refusing to pay 200 bucks for nothing. 200 bucks is still a very big amount, people are ready to kill someone for 100 rupees. What does this signify.

There are lots and lots of example which will make us think that weather we people are really civilized. Yes I agree that there had not been any single civilization, free of crime. But the quantum of these evil and disgraceful activities is so big in this present case, that the very word "civilization" started losing its meaning.

Regarding the very recent women harassment case in Delhi, I saw one of the ruling party leader of Delhi assembly at television stating his limitation in insuring the safety of women in Delhi mainly because of two reasons.
  1. The size of Delhi, both in terms of its area as well as the diverse population, which makes it difficult to trace the culprits.
  2. The openness present in the society which makes some of the supposedly innocent people practice some of their malefic dreams.
Now by putting my feet in the shoes of that leader, I find myself with very limited options to insure the law & order in such a huge state. You can't expect every single person or every single square foot of the land covered by a policeman. No it's definitely not possible. But atleast we should try to ensure that once the crime is reportted, the police should take a quick and rational step. It should be ideally followed by the quick judgment by the court, if the case reaches to that stage. The transparency of the system as well as its willingness to readily serve the people will make the society safer from the evilness. It will also ensure the security feeling in the society.

Another point raised by that leader was the openness present in the modern society. I do not agree to this point. But one can't rule out this point as it has been proved by some statistical data. The openness is inevitable in today's world. You can't stop it . Infact you shouldn't. But the thing is that education should be provided to everybody so that one can think about the limitations associated with the openness. One should judge all of his activities, before actually doing that. Now this openness has a very wide meaning which circles our ideas, our dressing, eating, public behavior and so many things. We can't authorize a single person to decide all the boundaries.

But we should follow the similar standards for everyone. I want no distinction being made on the basis of gender, caste, color or nationality. Then only we will be able to survive as a dignified society for a larger time. Take an example. The entire stubborn self-acclaimed mentor of Muslims are busy giving their opinion about the suitable length of Sania mirza. God knows weather they have taken a single step towards improving the poor literacy rate among the Muslims. They have not done anything to uplift the status of women in a middle class family. This was just an example. This type of psyche is omnipresent in the present society. So we have to get rid of this psyche first, we have to avoid using double standard; then only we can expect a safer and prosperous society.

Sometimes I wonder what are the reasons behind the continuous degradation of the moral values. Some of the gaudy and flashy answers which come in my mind are poverty, illiteracy, communalism, stubborn psyche and lack of opportunities.

Now one can't say that the high rate of literacy will ensure low crime rate, as people in the western countries are witnessing. But yes education will make people differentiating between good and bad, and the crime rate will certainly fall. Similar is the case with poverty. Long-term plans should be undertaken under continuous surveillance to remove poverty. But it has been seen that even in rich countries, crime rates are high. But atleast the current rate and form of crime will decrease.

Yup, I know that it's easier said than done. But in reality I want to do something for the society. I want to positively contribute in the system which is involved in the upliftment of the masses and the society. In today's world, if a child aspires for being a politician; his intentions are doubted as if he just want to do it for money and the corruption. The situation has to be changed. And nobody will come from different planet to do it. We, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA have to take the responsibility and try to contribute our part to improve the society and help India to reclaim its supremacy in the world, about which we have only read in history books.
